VJU is supported by a consortium of leading Japanese universities including the University of Tokyo (ranked #28 globally in QS), Osaka University, Kyushu University, University of Tsukuba, Waseda University, and Ritsumeikan University. Each Master's programme has a designated Japanese coordinator university, for example, Environmental Engineering is coordinated by the University of Tokyo together with Ritsumeikan University. Coordination is managed through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has supported VJU's establishment and ongoing development.

Vietnam-Japan University (VJU) was established in 2014 by Decree of Vietnam's Prime Minister, following a joint declaration by the Vietnamese and Japanese governments. VJU is the seventh member university of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), Vietnam's most prestigious university system. VJU is a research-oriented institution focused on advanced technologies, interdisciplinary sciences, and sustainability sciences. The university operates from two locations: the My Dinh campus in central Hanoi (Cau Dien Ward) and the new Hoa Lac campus in Thach That District. Faculty includes Vietnamese, Japanese and international scientists. The VJU Council has 20 members, 10 Vietnamese and 10 Japanese representatives. VJU researchers have published papers in the top 2% and 5% of their fields globally.
