De Montfort University (DMU), based in Leicester in England's East Midlands, is a large modern university with origins dating to 1870. With around 23,000 students, DMU is recognised for its strengths in creative industries, computing, business, design, law and the health sciences. The University was awarded Gold by the Office for Students for Teaching Excellence (TEF) and is known for its strong industry links, employability outcomes and emphasis on inclusive education. DMU's international footprint includes branch campuses in Dubai and Cambodia as well as Kazakhstan, providing students with cross-campus transfer options under a single global degree.

DMU Kazakhstan (DMUK) opened in September 2021 as the first UK branch campus in Kazakhstan, established through a strategic partnership between De Montfort University Leicester and EdPeritus UK. The campus is located in the Esentai City area of Almaty, in a modern building designed in a Google/Amazon-inspired open-plan style with collaborative learning spaces. All teaching is delivered in English by an international faculty (around 95% international), with academics from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, Mexico, India and beyond. Students graduate with a full UK De Montfort University degree, awarded by DMU Leicester, identical to the qualification given to UK-based DMU students. DMUK is the first NCUK University Campus and offers students the option to spend a full academic year at the Leicester main campus, DMU Dubai or DMU Cambodia. Annual short educational trips (1-2 weeks) take students to countries including South Korea, Japan and Georgia.

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital, home to about 2 million people set against the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains.
